Pluto Debate

Pluto Debate

In 2006, the International Astronomical Union (IAU) devised a formal definition of planet. As a result, Pluto was classified as a dwarf planet, a decision that some astronomers and much of the general public oppose. With the New Horizon probe's flyby in July, we now know more about Pluto than ever before.

Do you agree with the classification? Two of our own Virginia Tech Astronomy professors will debate Pluto's planetary status in an epic Pluto Smackdown!

Dr. John Simonetti (advocating for Pluto's planetary status) and Dr. Nahum Arav (advocating for Pluto's reclassification) of the Virginia Tech Physics Department

The debate occurred on April 23, 2015
